Indigenous culture in Lapland
No adventure tours to Lapland would be complete without an understanding of the Sami. The Sami are felt to be the oldest group of indigenous people in the world, and their history is fraught with difficulty. They were not initially settled so far north, but the Vikings drove them up to the Arctic Circle. Then in the 1700's they were forbidden to speak their own language. They have survived, however, and there are now approximately 50,000 members of this ethnic group. They have several languages which are even taught in local universities, and they generally speak the language of the area in which they live. If you visit Lapland, be sure to make the acquaintance of these unique people.
