Tour types and grading system

In order to get the best from your Greenland adventure tour it is important, both for your sake and that of the others in the group, that you choose a tour best suited to your physical expectations and with the level of comfort you desire.

We uses a grading system that runs from 1 to 5 and each tour is given a grade reflecting its level of difficulty. The grading system is based on several factors that determine the level of physical fitness required ; the condition of foot paths, the number of height meters climbed in a day, the length of the tour, the weight to be carried during the trek and the average climatic conditions.

This grading system is only for our tours and cannot be compared to other systems.

Grade 1 Easy walking on good paths requiring no previous experience of trekking. You should have good general health and be used to light physical activity e.g.. walking or cycling. It is possible to take a day off from walking during the tour.

Grade 2 Moderate walking on reasonably good paths with the possibility of some long climbs. No experience of trekking is required but you should be used to moderate physical activity, perhaps a sport at home. Anyone with average fitness will be able to enjoy the trek. It is possible to take a day off from the trekking during the tour.

Grade 3 Relatively hard trekking, often in difficult terrain and with some long climbs. The tour requires no technical experience of climbing but you should have a good level of fitness and be of good health. Sometimes possible to take off from the trekking during the tour.

Grade 4 Demanding trekking in difficult terrain with long climbs, often long days and the possibility of crossing high ledges. Previous experience in the mountains is an advantage and you must have a high level of fitness.

Grade 5 Demanding trekking and/ or mountain climbing often crossing glaciers and trekking in very difficult terrain. You must not suffer from vertigo and you must have previous experience in the mountains. High level of fitness is required.

Guaranteed rates

Both price guarantee and departure guarantee is serviced on the trip. For that reason the price that is released when you book is always applicable and you will never run the risk of having an extra bill sent to you. Departure guarantee is given 2 months before take-off. Except for pioneer trips and trips that last less than 8 days. These trips are given a departure guarantee 1 month before departure. This means that you will know at an early stage if your trip is completed or not.

Preparations before leaving

Walking in the mountains will test your fitness. To prepare yourself before departure we recommend cycling, aerobics, swimming and, of course, long walks in hilly terrain. During the long climbs on treks it is the heart and lungs that are put to the test and it is then that good basic fitness is rewarded. On long, steep descents it is the knees and feet that are put under more pressure than they are perhaps used to. You should be sure your legs are up to it before you leave. The better condition you are in, the more you will enjoy the trip with a little energy left to take in the surroundings. If you have any unanswered questions about the grading you are welcome to ring us and we will try to help you choose the tour that suits you best.
