 BEACH RIDE ADVENTURE 2009

COUNTRYSIDE RIDING TOUR

Difficulty rating:

4 days/ 3 nights,  Reykjavík - Stóri-Kálfalækur - Kolviðarnes - Traðir -

Löngufjörur - Snæfellsnes Peninsula -

Snæfellsjökull Glacier - Eldborgarhraun - Reykjavík

Departures: June 04, 11 / August 20

Beachride

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula stretches out into the West of Iceland. You can find all features of the Icelandic nature

here, but on this tour we emphasize the black and golden sand of the beach at Löngufjörur. This traditional trail,

only revealed by the tide, offers horses and riders great opportunities to perform the smooth gait tölt over long

distances. Nowhere else in Iceland can you ride for hours without any obstacle to slow down riders and their mount.
Sigurður (Siggi) and Ólöf are our hosts for this exciting ride which leaves nobody untouched. Siggi knows the

traditional trail like no other and leads horses and riders safely to their destination. Since the ride is bound to the tide

it can start any time of the day, or last even long into the night. Should the tide prove to be unfavorable on your first

riding day, we will choose a scenic route on land and spend the following three days on the beach.
During the first two riding days you view mystical Snæfellsjökull Glacier ahead of you, known in literature to be the

entrance to the centre of the earth. When direction changes you head back towards mighty Eldborgarhraun Lava field.

Imagine the black lava still on the move on your way back to dry land. On this tour you do not have to pack every

day – each night you return to Stóri-Kálfalækur Farm where you stay in made up beds throughout the ride. Between

two and four guests share a room and the warm outdoor tub offers relaxation after the adventure of the day.

Day 1 Thu STORI-KALFALÆKUR - KOLVIÐARNES (D)

Morning transfer to Stóri-Kálfalækur Farm where our ride starts. After an introduction to the Icelandic horse and its special gaits we ride down to the shore. View Eldborgarhraun Lava field and its crater on your way to Kolviðarnes Farm, where we leave the horses. (25 km) If the tide proves to be unfavorable we choose a trail on land and ride underneath Mt. Fagradalsfjall, close to Grettisbæli, hide out of one of Iceland's outlaws during the Saga ages.

Day 2 Fri KOLVIÐARNES  - TRAÐIR  - STORI-KALFALÆKUR (B, L, D)
After rejoining the horses we start our ride on Löngufjörur, the famous horse trail on the seashores of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. View mystical Snæfellsjökull Glacier ahead of you, known in literature to be the entrance to the centre of the earth. Feel the horses’ excitement and take part in their joy on this extraordinary trail released by the tide. Our horses spend the night at Traðir. (35 km)

Children riding

Day 3 Sat  TRAÐIR - KOLVIÐARNES - STORI-KALFALÆKUR (B, L, D)
Another day on the golden colored, sandy beach. Direction changes and we head back towards the mighty Eldborgarhraun Lava field. A unique experience for everyone, with lava-fields and mountains on one side of the trail and the open Atlantic Ocean on the other. (35 km)

Day 4 Sun KOLVIÐARNES - STORI-KALFALÆKUR (B)
Our last day on the beach! The sand turns black as we follow the outline of the Eldborgarhraun Lava field. Imagine the black lava still on the move on your way back to dry land. The ride ends at Stóri-Kálfalækur Farm, where we bid farewell to hosts and horses and drive back to Reykjavík. (25 km)

Knee-high rubber boots are recommended for this tour.
