NORTHERN LIGHTS VOYAGE 2008

ON THE NORWEGIAN HURTIGRUTEN

"The Most beautiful Sea Voyage in the World"

9 days / 7 nights, Tromsø - Kirkenes - Tromsø

Departures 2008:  Feb 9,  19,   26

Northern Lights voyage

Your journey begins at the same latitude as Siberia and Alaska, where the influence of the Gulf Stream creates the longest ice-free polar coast. Joining your ship in Norway's Arctic capital, Tromsø, you begin your leisurely voyage north. Together with your fellow passengers, you'll keep your eyes to the skies as you pass through the waters toward Honningsvag. From Honningsvag you may join an excursion to mainland Europe's most northerly point, North Cape. This is a wild and windswept headland where the cliffs rise dramatically nearly 1,000 feet from the sea; as you gaze out, nothing but water stands between you and the frozen wastes surrounding the North Pole.
Sailing on, you'll bear east, and eventually reach the sheltered harbor of Kirkenes, about six miles from the Russian border. Kirkenes is the turning point for the Hurtigruten voyage, and this fascinating little town offers a tantalizing glimpse into life in this remote region of Norway. In Kirkenes, it is possible to visit the border with Russia, try your hand at snowmobiling or enjoy a taste of Sami life.
The return journey from Kirkenes hugs the coastline, revisiting the remote settlements that rely on the Hurtigruten ships to maintain contact with the rest of Norway. You'll stay overnight in Tromsø after leaving the ship.
