DISKO BAY 2008

NORTH TO SOUTH  BY COASTAL SHIP

10 days / 9 nights, West Coast of Greenland from the Disko Bay to Narsarsuaq

Departures: Thursdays, June 12, 19, 26 /  July 03, 10, 17, 24, 31 / Aug 07, 14, 21, 28

Disko Bay Greenland scenes

Cruising along the west coast on board the Greenland Coastal Steamer in style. Accommodated in modern outside cabin with private facilities. It is a fine way to comprehend the huge size of the world's biggest island and a fine way to meet the locals using the ship as their local bus. In South Greenland as well as in the Disko Bay you will have time to learn about life in the Arctic and to experience the Arctic nature and the remains from the Vikings and the early Eskimos. Welcome on board.

HIGHLIGHTS

Ilulissat
Town of the giant icebergs and home of the UNESCO designated Ilulissat Ice Fiord. This is the third biggest town in Greenland and a real big city where modern life meets old fashion life style, all surrounded by amazing nature. Here, ice is the main theme; get close to the icy giants covered in the rays of the midnight sun on the amazing Ice Fiord cruise, join the full day boat excursion to the calving glacier; Eqip Sermia or discover the full length of the ice filled Kangia Ice Fiord on a helicopter trip flying in low altitude over the Fiord. You can also visit some of the remote settlements where fishing and hunting still provide the living.

The Sea Voyage
Meet the local population traveling from town to town to visit relatives and friends along the coast. Enjoy the beautiful and varied landscape as we leave the rough high Arctic nature and reach the green and fertile South Greenland. We sail in open waters and in narrow straits, so close that you can almost touch the mountains. Along the way the ship calls in the major towns and in a few settlements. Everywhere, the arrival of the ship makes people rush to the harbour to welcome friends and relatives. Life on board is relaxing, enjoy the view and make sure to keep your eyes open, as humpback whales are often seen.

When calling in the cities of Sisimiut, Nuuk and Qaqortoq the ship guide will take you on short informative city walks. Most days the guide will also give a lecture on a topic related to Greenland.

The Greenland capital, Nuuk
Along the way we visit Greenland’s capital; Nuuk. During a guided city tour the guide will give you an impression of one of the world’s smallest capitals. We pass by the parliament, the old colonial harbour with the oldest house in Greenland and the modern suburbs.

Narsarsuaq
Historic sites from the Viking age are spread all over South Greenland, amongst them the place where Eric the Red settled down. We visit the reconstruction of his farm and the first Christian church built on the American continent. Also, calving glaciers and the Inland Ice Cap are within short range of you hotel.
