Sailing plays a very important
role in the Greenlandic infrastructure and a cruise
along the West coast of Greenland is a fabulous way
of experiencing this beautiful and varied country.
Our
amazing journey begins in the gentle and
luxuriant southern Greenland, where the sheep
gracing pastures stretches right down to the fiord.
Get close to the harbour atmosphere in the small
seaports, where the locals often gather when a ship
comes in. After being blocked by ice for months at a
time, this is a nice interruption of every day life.
It is in these ports where families meet and
separate, and where busy fishermen bring
in the
catch of the day. There are great chances for seeing
whales and seals during the sailing trip, as they
play under the surface of the sea and in between the
icebergs.
During the sailing we cross the Arctic Circle about
185 miles south of Ilulissat, where the Midnight sun
illuminates the icebergs until the middle of July.
We reach Ilulissat after sailing for 745 miles. Stay
at the fabulous Hotel Artic, located on a hill just
above the town. Enjoy amazing views of the Disko
bay, the Icefjord and Ilulissat. The stay in
Ilulissat offers plenty of opportunities to explore
the surroundings.
HIGHLIGHTS
South Greenland
Historic sites from the Viking age are spread all
over South Greenland, amongst them the place where
Eric the Red settled down. We visit the
reconstruction of his farm and the first Christian
church built on the American continent.
The Sea Voyage
Meet the local population traveling from town to
town to visit relatives and friends along the coast.
Enjoy the beautiful and varied landscape as we leave
green and fertile South Greenland and enter the
rough high Arctic area in the Disko Bay. We sail in
open waters and in narrow straits, so close that you
can almost touch the mountains. Along the way the
ship calls in the major towns and in a few
settlements. Everywhere, the arrival of the ship
makes people rush to the harbour to welcome friends
and relatives. Life on board is relaxing, enjoy the
view and make sure to keep your eyes open, as
humpback whales are often seen.
When calling in the cities of Qaqortoq, Nuuk and
Sisimiut the ship guide will take you on short
informative city walks. Most days the guide will
also give a lecture on a topic related to Greenland.
The Greenland capital, Nuuk
Along the way we visit Greenland’s capital; Nuuk.
During a guided city tour the guide will give you an
impression of one of the world’s smallest capitals.
We pass by the parliament, the old colonial harbour
with Greenland’s oldest house and the modern
suburbs.
Ilulissat
Town of the giant icebergs and home of the UNESCO
designated Ilulissat Ice Fiord. This is the third
biggest town in Greenland and a real big city where
modern life meets old fashion life style, all
surrounded by amazing nature. Here, ice is the main
theme; get close to the icy giants covered in the
rays of the midnight sun on the amazing Ice Fiord
cruise, join the full day boat excursion to the
calving glacier, Eqip Sermia or discover the full
length of the ice filled Kangia Ice Fiord on a
helicopter trip flying in low altitude over the
Fiord. You can also visit some of the remote
settlements where fishing and hunting still provide
the living.
