Midsummer, full of wonders
and festivities, is the most
popular festival in Scandinavia, dating back to
the Viking age or even earlier. It is a celebration of the Summer
solstice, the longest day of the year. In Sweden
and Finland, Midsummer, the time of magic and
wonder-working, is celebrated as a
public holiday during the third weekend of June.
What better way to experience the celebrations of
Midsummer than on a small ship cruise. Come
sail with us to Visby, perhaps the
best-preserved medieval town in Scandinavia,
named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The many
ruins of churches and abbeys give Visby, "the
City of Roses and Ruins," its unique charm. On
Åland we visit the maritime city of Mariehamn,
founded in 1861 while Åland and Finland formed
part of the mighty Russian Empire. Return voyage
across the Baltic Sea to Helsinki, the capital
of Finland, often called the "Daughter of the
