GÖTA CANAL CRUISES

BY M/S DIANA

Two Seas - One River - Three Canals -

Eight Lakes -Sixty Five Locks

2 Days / 1 Night, Söderköping - Motala

Gota Canal cruises in Sweden on Wilhelm Tham, Diana and Juno

 ITINERARY

 Söderköping - Motala , 2 days

 Day 1

 11.30 Dep. Söderköping
Söderköping is an idyllic town, which was founded in the 13th century and it was one of the most important during

the Hanseatic era. The town also has a long and fascinating history as a spa.

 12.10-13.15 Dufkullen-Mariehov-Carlsborg. A set of nine locks.

14.30-15.00 Lake Asplongen, 27 meters above sea level.

 16.30 Norsholm
The railway line between Stockholm and Malmo crosses here. There is also a lock at Norsholm.

 17.00-18.30 Runstorp
Runstorp is a manor house dating from Sweden's period of greatness. You will given a tour by the owner himself,

telling you about the exciting history of the mansion. Runstorp is not open to the public which makes this an exclusive

 visit.

18.30-20.30 Lake Roxen, 33 meters above sea level.

 20.30 Berg
We dock for the night below the impressive lock staircase at Berg. The evening offers the possibility to take a walk

along the canal or to go for an evening swim in Lake Roxen.

 Day 2

 07.30 Berg (Carl-Johan)
The Carl-Johan lock staircase is the longest in the canal with seven connected locks. At Berg there is a system of a

total of 15 locks. Here you can take a walk along the canal to the Vreta convent and ruins. The convent of Vreta

Kloster, now a ruin, was the first to be built in Sweden. It dates from about 1100 and its importance was later over-

shadowed by the convent founded by St. Birgitta in Vadstena. The church is one of the most interesting in Sweden,

with many medieval works of art. Today, it is used as a parish church and therefore not always open.

 10.00 Berg (Heda)
Departure after having passed through 15 locks at Berg.

 10.20 Ljungsbro Aqueduct
Here we pass over the first of two aqueducts (built in 1970) on our journey.

 13.00 Aqueduct Borensberg
Just before Borensberg, there is an aqueduct (built in 1993).

 13.30 Borensberg
One of two manually operated locks is found here and also the well-known Göta Hotel (built in 1908).

13.30-14.30 Lake Boren, 73 meters above sea level.

 14.30-15.10 Borenshult
Lock stairway of five locks. The song of the nightingale is often heard in this area.

 16.00 Arr. Motala
As Baltzar von Platen had intended, Motala developed into a town. Motala Werkstad, an engineering works, was

established here to serve the Göta Canal and was considered the cradle of Swedish industry. The head office of the

Göta Canal Company and also a number of interesting museums are located in Motala.

Subject to changes. All times stated are approximate.
