Iceland Overland Expedition

This new escorted tour, the Overland Expedition, is for young and adventurous travelers. Exploring by 4x4 Econoliner Van with one of our most experienced guides, the tour offers a fresh and fascinating journey through Iceland, filled with breathtaking highlights. 7 nights are with private facilities but 3 nights are in a hut with shared facilities. There will be some walking but you don't have to be experts in walking or hiking. Focusing on the interest of our travelers, there will be some evening walks, depending on weather condition.

Beginning with the Thingvellir National Park, we reach the Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir hot springs. Explore the Þórsmörk Valley, along the south shore with stops at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, and Dyrhólaey Nature Reserve. From the Skaftafell National Park and Vatnajökull Glacier reach the Glacial Lagoon for a cruise between the icebergs. Travel one of the most adventurous routes for 4wd vehicles in the country to the desert highlands. Admire lava fields, colorful rhyolite mountains of  Landmannalaugar and relax in the Nature Baths of Lake Mývatn before proceeding to Husavik, where you can enjoy an afternoon of whale-watching. From Akureyri flight back to Reykjavik.

Day 1 ARRIVAL IN ICELAND

Individual arrival at Keflavik Airport. Transfer on your own by Flybus to the hotel. Overnight stay in Reykjavík

Day 2 ÞINGVELLIR - GULLFOSS - GEYSIR - HVOLSVÖLLUR (D)

Meet with guide and drive from Reykjavik to Þingvallavatn, Iceland´ s largest lake, and Þingvellir National Park, the ancient site of the world's first parliament. Explore Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, and Geysir Hot Spring area to see the famous Geysir and Strokkur, along with numerous other hot springs and boiling mud pools. Overnight in Hvolsvöllur area.

Gullfoss, M. Wokaun

Day 3 HVOLSVÖLLUR  - ÞÓRSMÖRK - KIRKJUBAEJARKLAUSTUR (B, D)

Start the day in awe in Þórsmörk Nature Reserve with its unique composition of glaciers, rocks and greenery. Þórsmörk means the area of Þór, one of the Gods in the pageant Nordic religion. Continue along the south shore and stop to admire the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss before continuing to Dyrhólaey Nature Reserve. Onwards to the village Vík and cross Eldhraun, a large mass of lava, before reaching the small village Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Overnight in Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.

Day 4 SKAFTAFELL - JÖKULSÁRLÓN - KIRKJUBAEJARKLAUSTUR (B, D)
Depart from Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Skaftafell National Park, where the waterfall Svartifoss surges over pillars of glittering black basalt dominated by Vatnajökull, Europe's largest ice cap. Continue to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon where huge icebergs float and grind together in the still, deep waters of the lagoon, providing a surreal backdrop for a cruise with a difference. Overnight in Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.

Skaftafell

Day 5 ELDGJA - LANDMANNALAUGAR (B, D)

Strike out along the Fjallabaksleið interior track to Eldgjá, "The Fire Fissure", and Landmannalaugar, a magnificent area surrounded by colorful rhyolite mountains. Recall the natural wonders of the previous few days during a relaxing soak in naturally warm pools. Overnight in a hut in Landmannalaugar area.

Day 6 SPRENGISANDUR (B, D)

Across the wilderness of Sprengisandur, a wild, desolate land of breathtaking emptiness. This part of the interior, is the longest stretch between the South and the North and is only passable by 4wd vehicles during summer. It is mostly very desolate and barren. This day will certainly leave you with some unforgettable memories and experience. Overnight in hut and barbecue dinner.

Day 7 GAESAVÖTN - ASKJA (B, D)
A unique day in the heart of Iceland. Start the day by driving the isolated road towards Gæsavötn on the northern side of Vatnajökull glacier. This route is one of the most interesting and adventurous for 4wd vehicles in the country. It takes us along the northern edge of Vatnajökull glacier and into the desert highlands of Dyngjufjöll mountains and the Askja caldera. Explore this magnificent area and the volcanic crater Víti. This could be the most mysterious day during the tour. Overnight in hut and barbecue dinner.

Day 8 ASKJA - LAKE MÝVATN (B)

From Askja we pass the largest continuous lava field in Iceland, Ódáðahraun, before descending into the greenness of the oasis Lake Mývatn, a wonderland of bird life and strange volcanic rock formations. Top the day off with a relaxing bath in the Mývatn nature baths. Overnight in Mývatn area.

Lake Myvatn

Day 9 LAKE MÝVATN - HUSAVIK (B)

Explore some of the many places of contrast between volcanoes, fauna and flora of the Lake Mývatn area before heading towards the bustling Húsavík village, on the eastern shores of The Skjalfandi Bay. In Húsavík you have the option to go on a whale watching tour. Overnight in Húsavík.

Day 10 AKUREYRI - REYKJAVIK (B)

Day 11 DEPARTURE (B)

Breakfast at the hotel. Check out and departure.
