SILENCE OF THE WINTER

HUSKY SLED ADVENTURE IN SWEDISH LAPLAND

Duration: 4 days / 3 nights

Dates: Dec 04, 11, 2008 / Jan 10, 24 / Feb 17, 25, 2009

Silence of the Winter with huskies

The first snow has fallen and the dogs are eager to pull us out into the snow covered wilderness. We move along frozen rivers and beautiful pine tree-forests that are shimmering white. You will have your own team of 4-6 huskies and we travel with the dogs around 20-60 km per day depending on the group and weather conditions. This tour will take you into the midwinter dream!

KANGOS - show on Google Maps ™

Day 1  ARRIVAL KIRUNA OR KITTILÄ (L, D)
After the flight to Kiruna or
Kittilä airport, you will be picked up by your hosts Johan or Sara. They will guide you along the road to Kangos, a small village 150 km north of the Arctic Circle set in the northern Torne river valley. Stop along the way for lunch.  After arrival to Kangos you will meet the huskies and get a chance to learn more about these remarkable animals. We enjoy a homemade lunch by the fire or in a cozy timber cabin. After eating it’s time for a short introduction into the practical
side of “mushing”. When everyone feels ready we will then prepare and pack the sledges and harness your own team of 4-6 huskies and start this amazing journey through the Arctic countryside.(10-20km)
Overnight in wilderness cabin.

Day 2 HUSKY MUSHING (B, L, D)

After a good night sleep in a small wood cabin we start the day with taking care of the dogs while the guide is preparing breakfast. After feeding the dogs, we enjoy our breakfast and discuss the tour of the day. Harness the huskies, who will become our trusted friends and companions on our unforgettable adventure. Experience the tranquility and serenity of the snow covered landscape; enjoy the silence of the wintry fell surrounding us. The only sounds of the pure wilderness are the breathing of the dogs and the noise of their feet on the snow. We stop after 2-3 hours and enjoy lunch out in the wild. After a well deserved break, the dogs are eager to run, and we continue mushing for 2-3 hours. The day ends with a nice home cooked meal before settling down for the night in our wilderness cabin. (40-60km)

Overnight in wilderness cabin.

Day 3 HUSKY MUSHING (B, L, D)

By now you will feel more familiar with the dogs and sled and can relax to truly enjoy pristine nature.  We glide along frozen rivers, through deep forests and on shimmering white mires. Stop to warm up  with a nice soup, made over the fire. The last part of the trail is in a winter feeding area for reindeer. The dogs are used to the animals, and many times we pass just a few meters from the reindeer herds.  In the midst of this area we reach the wilderness cabins were we are going to spend the night.

(40-60km)

Overnight in wilderness cabin.

Day 4 HUSKY MUSHING (B, L)

After taking care of the dogs and eating breakfast we start our journey back to Kangos. After about one hour we reach the Husky camp. After saying a last goodbye to your team of dogs, we travel by car to the Kiruna or Lulea airport. On the way we stop for lunch. Your adventure of a lifetime with man's best friends has come to an end. (10-20km)
