SILENT JOURNEY IN THE GREAT WILDERNESS

HUSKY MUSHING ADVENTURE

 IN SWEDISH LAPLAND

Duration: 7 days / 6 nights

Dates: March 23 - 29, 2009 or on request

Huskies on Silent Journey, Swedish Lapland

The huskies will pull us through a fairytale landscape rich in wildlife. The only sound that you hear is the sled against

the snow and breathes from the dogs. This is true wilderness. You will get the chance to really get to know the

Huskies and feel how it is to bee a real “Musher”. This tour is for those who really seek an adventure and are up

 for a challenge!

KANGOS - show on Google Maps ™

Day 1  ARRIVAL KIRUNA OR KITTILÄ (L, D)
After the flight to Kiruna or
Kittilä airport, you will be picked up by your hosts Johan or Sara. Transfer to Kangos, a small village 150 km north of the Arctic Circle set in the northern Torne river valley. After arrival to Kangos you will meet the huskies. While you get to know these remarkable animals, your guide is preparing the first wilderness lunch over the open fire. Time for a short introduction into the practical side of "mushing". We prepare the sledges and harness the huskies and start our amazing journey through the Arctic countryside. (10-20 km)

Day 2 - 3 HUSKY MUSHING (B, L, D)

The days start with taking care of the dogs while the guide is preparing breakfast. After feeding the dogs we enjoy our breakfast and discuss the tour of the day. Then we harness the huskies and head into the peaceful wilderness of Lapland. The only sounds that can be heard are the breathing of the dogs and the noise of their feet on the snow. Experience the tranquility and silence of the winter wonderland. We stop after 2-3 hours and enjoy lunch out in the wild. After a short rest, the dogs are eager to run, and we keep on mushing for 2-3 hours. The days ends with a nice home-cooked meal before settling down for the night in our wilderness cabin. (20-60 km)

Day 4 - 5 PESSINKI NATURE RESERVE (B, L, D)

After lunch on day 4 we will reach the cabins where we are going to stay for two nights. It is a beautiful area with miles after miles with untouched forest. For two nights we will stay in a true wilderness cabin, with none of life’s modern day luxuries. The cabin is situated in a winter feeding for reindeer, hopefully a few will honor us with their presence during the evening. On day 5 we put on snowshoes for a beautiful hike in the area and in the evening we enjoy a hot sauna, and for those who wants a cold ice-bath, before settling down to sleep.(20-60 km)

Day 6 - 7 HUSKY MUSHING (B, L, D)

These last two days we are heading back towards reality. Now we know how to handle the teams and can relax and enjoy the ride. The trail goes on frozen rivers, in deep forests and on shimmering white mires. We spend the last night in a cozy log-cabin and enjoy a three-course dinner with local specialties. After saying a last goodbye to the dogs we travel by car to the airport.
