Location
Kangerlussuaq, which is the Greenlandic name for Søndre Strømfjord, means
“the great fjord”. In 1928, Greenland’s first landing strip was marked out
on the clay plain at the base of Søndre Strømfjord. Later the United States Air Force established
a Danish/American defense area there under the name of Sondreström Air Base.
There is no longer an American base in Kangerlussuaq, but the buildings and
the airport are still in use. Kangerlussuaq Airport today is a civilian
airport; close by the airport terminal is Hotel Kangerlussuaq & Conference
Center, a modern hotel awarded three-star status in 2000. There is also a
bar, a cafeteria and a gourmet restaurant. On the other side of the landing
strip is the original base area, now housing a nightclub, a bowling alley, a
swimming pool, and a conference centre and conference hall. There is also a
hotel annex, with a total of 62 rooms, plus a campsite with access to
toilets and water supplies.
Rooms
The 3-star Hotel Kangerlussuaq has 85 rooms, most of which have en-suite
facilities. All rooms have color TV, minibar, telephone with Internet
socket. For those guests who require a little extra comfort, there are two
luxury suites. The staff will do all they can to live up to our 3-star
status, and do their best to ensure your stay is an excellent experience,
whether it is for just one night or for a whole week. Conference guests are
usually lodged in the hotel annex, where they are accommodated in the former
barrack rooms, now modernized. Hotel Kangerlussuaq has a number of
rooms with access for people with disabilities and of course smoke-free
rooms.
Food & Drink
The airport building contains an attractive à la carte restaurant that can
seat 70 people. The restaurant is one of the best in Greenland, and offers
an international menu with particular emphasis on top-class French and
Danish cuisine, along with all our delicious Greenlandic specialties. Musk
ox and reindeer are especially popular. Many of the ingredients are supplied
locally.
Larger events may be held in the Dining Hall, which can accommodate up to
220 people seated snugly round small tables. If you want something fast
before a trip to the hills or the inland ice, we can recommend the cafeteria
with its excellent range of food. During the evening you can go dancing at
Klubben, Greenland’s biggest dance venue. When your legs have had enough,
you can rest them in one of the two bars available, where you can also play
billiards or darts. Bowling, fitness centre, solarium, swimming baths and
sauna approx 1.5 km from the hotel. Kangerlussuaq also has an 18-hole golf
course to international dimensions.
