MEET THE ICELANDIC SANTAS 2008

5 days / 4 nights, Reykjavik - Akureyri - Santa World -

Lake Mývatn - Reykjavik

Departures: Dec 04, 11 & 18, 2008

Icelandic Santa scenes

13 Santa Clauses live in Iceland! They are called Yule lads, descendants of trolls and are the Icelandic version of

Santa Claus. 13 days before Christmas they start coming down from the mountains, one by one, to visit the children.

Sometimes in rags but other times wearing their best red and white suits. For decades Icelandic children have put their

shoes on the windowsill at night so that the Yule lads can leave them a small gift. There is a catch though, only those

that have behaved nicely will get one. To visit the Yule lads in Dimmuborgir, North Iceland, is an unforgettable

experience for everyone. It is time for families and friends to enjoy the spirit of Christmas in peaceful surroundings.

Day 3 SANTA WORLD & NATURE WONDERS (B, D)

An exciting day is ahead. First you will explore interesting nature sites around the lake, such as the lava formations at the park Höfdi, bubbling mud pools of Hverarönd and the underground cave of Grjótagjá. One of the day’s highlights is a visit to the cowshed café of Vogafjós where you can taste local food and pet the cows. Then it is time to seek out the Yule lads in their home of Dimmuborgir, an area of strange rock formations and caves. The Yule lads are playful and love when children of all ages visit them. If you behave nicely they will probably show you their cave. The last visit of the tour is at the Mývatn Nature Baths, where it is excellent to relax in the natural warm geothermal water.
In the evening, a traditional Christmas dinner will be served at the hotel.

Accommodation: Sel Hotel Mývatn

* THE STORY OF THE YULE LADS

Gryla and Leppaludi have always lived in Ludentsborgir in Myvatnssveit, and this is where they brought up their thirteen Yule Lads. As the lads grew up, things began to feel rather cramped at home and they started to want places of their own. So Gryla and Leppaludi decided to go in search of new lands and find a new home for their offspring. They looked all over the world – to Finland, Greenland, and even further. But in the end what the lads wanted most was to be close to mummy and daddy, and Dimmuborgir was the perfect place for them to settle down.

Ever since then the Yule Lads have lived at Dimmuborgir and been very happy with their view over beautiful Myvatnssveit. To start with, the Yule Lads were quite a handful, annoying the people round about and playing tricks on them, but in the end they calmed down and now they are the best of friends to all children.
