ILULISSAT & KANGERLUSSUAQ / GREENLAND

 

Winter Excursions

I1: City Walk Ilulissat
During a walk through town our guide tells about the history of Ilulissat. We visit the old part of town and see the buildings from the very start of the Danish trading station, the busy fishing harbour, the old Zion church and the museum.
Duration: 4 hours (approx.) / Price: USD $ 70 per person including lunch



I2: Easy Hike to the Ice Fiord
By car as far as the road goes followed by an easy hike to a viewpoint from where the magnificent icebergs at the mouth of the Ice Fiord can be seen.
Duration: 3 hours (approx.) / Price: USD $ 50 per person including refreshment

I3: Hunters’ Settlement Rodebay by Boat
By boat to the small settlement Rodebay (Oqaitsut), which is only accessible by boat or dog sledge. The settlement has approx. 80 inhabitants who are entirely depending upon fishing and hunting - a quite different world compared to the nearby town of Ilulissat. Lunch at a local restaurant and time to stroll around in the village before returning to Ilulissat.
(In some periods packed lunch from the hotel). Operated by boat when open water - expected to be until late November and from mid March, but might also be all winter. When the fiord is frozen the village is only accessible by dog sledge: Please see full day excursion by dog sledge.

I4: Iceberg cruise by boat
Ilulissat is world famous for its icebergs and a cruise provides the perfect opportunity to get close to these gigantic sculptures created by nature.
Only operated when open water. Expected to be until late November and from mid March, but might also be all winter.
Duration: 2½ hours (approx.) / Price: USD $ 105 per person incl. refreshment

 

 

I10a: Dog Sledge Adventure
To leave the civilized world and enter the Arctic Wonderland of low passes, ice covered fiords where icebergs raise like sculptures is like traveling back in time into the world of the old polar explorers - all you hear is the sound of the sledge moving over the ice and the shouts of encouragement your driver makes to control his dogs. The route will be depending upon actual snow and ice conditions. Only operated when snow - expected from early/mid December to late March! Rent of fur clothes and boots at surcharge.
Duration: 2 hours / Price: USD $ 155 - one person per sledge

 

 

I10b: Dog Sledge Adventure

Duration: 2 hours (approx.) / Price: USD $ 230 - for 2 persons on the same sledge ($ 115 per person)



I10c: Dog sledge Adventure

I11: Rental Service
Rent of fur clothes - for special cold days and for dog sledge tours. The outside temperature might drop to minus 25 degrees Celsius - a cold but also unique experience! Luckily genuine Greenlandic seal skin Anorak and trousers as well as polar boots are possible to rent. Rent per day of fur clothes incl. boots: USD $ 60 per person



Kangerlussuaq, Winter 2005-06
Excursions


K1: Kangerlussuaq Information Tour
Orientation tour of Kangerlussuaq to learn about the history of the airport and to show the locations of the various facilities such as fast food restaurant, night club, bowling hall, swimming pool etc.
Duration: 2 hours (approx.) / Price: USD $ 70 per person

K2: The Inland Ice Cap
We drive along the mountain track and partly off-road directly to the Greenland Inland Ice Cap - passing through the impressive arctic landscape such as former glacier valleys, the arctic dessert, along frozen rivers and over small passes - and stop next to this 3mill. cubic kilometers lump of ice.
Duration: 4 - 5 hours / Price: USD $ 115 per person including refreshment



K3: Musk Oxen and Reindeer Safari
The world's biggest population of wild Musk Oxen are living in close range of Kangerlussuaq.
We drive to an area where the animals are seen almost daily and are often able to go quite close for good photo opportunities. Reindeer, Polar Foxes and Polar Hares can be seen too.
Duration: 1½ hour / Price: USD $ 45 per person

K4: Dog Sledge Experience
On a 2 hour tour you will - together with your Greenland driver and his pack of Greenland huskies - have the unique experience of traveling like the Inuit have been doing for centuries.
Only operated when snow - expected from early / mid December to late March! Rent of sealskin anorak & trousers and boots are included in all Arctic Adventure Dog Sledge Tours in Kangerlussuaq.
Duration: 2 hours (approx.) / Price: USD $ 190 per person

K5: Ice Fishing on the Fiord
Transport by snow scooters to the fiord, where a snack will be served. Fishing by line through drilled holes on the frozen fiord. Rent of clothes & boots are included in the price. Only operated when the ice is safe - expected from mid January to mid of March.

K6: Northern Light Evening Tour
Kangerlussuaq is one of the best locations in the world to experience Aurora Borealis. We drive by car to a cozy cabin at Lake Ferguson where the guide tells the Greenland Sagas and serve refreshments while we hope to experience nature's unique show when the fantastic Northern Light flashes over the sky. Only operated in the Northern Light season from end of November to end of March.
Duration: 2½ hours (approx.) / Price: USD $ 70 per person


K10: Snow Scooter Tour
The tour starts in Old Camp with a short lesson in scooter driving. The tour goes through a quarry up the mountain “Køkkenfjeld”. From there it continues westwards to Kelly Ville before returning to Kangerlussuaq. Please notice that everybody gets his or her own snow scooter. Rent of clothes & boots are included in the price. Only operated when snow - expected from mid December to late March.

K11: Rent of Polar Suit
Most visitors do not have the proper clothing for the Arctic Winter - for “city-use” and excursions (except dog sledge and snow scooter tours) you will be comfortable wearing a one piece full-body polar suit with a hood. Rent per day: USD $ 35 per person / Rent per stay: USD $ 70 per person
