SPITSBERGEN HUSKY SAFARI

5 days /4 nights Longyearbyen - Barentsburg - Kapp Linné - Fridtjof Glacier -

Van Mijenfjord - Tempelfjord - Longyearbyen

Departure Sundays: Apr 15, 22, 29 / May 06, 13, 2006

Towards the very top of the Northern Hemisphere lies the Svalbard Archipelago. It is the most accessible high Arctic area in the world, yet its vast expanses of pristine nature appear almost completely untouched by humans. Large parts of Svalbard are national parks and nature preserves outside the few human settlements. There are no roads connecting the settlements, making Svalbard one of the few remaining areas of unspoiled wilderness.

A 5-day tour program in Longyearbyen, with dogsleds in the Tempelfjord, across glaciers and icy fjords and plains, miles away from civilization. Silently the dogs lead us through valleys, over frozen fjords and snow-covered glaciers. Three days are spent in the wilderness. The Polar dogs have long traditions in Arctic areas, for centuries man and dogs have experienced blizzards, pale blue moonlight, winter landscapes and midnight sun together. Up to the 1960`s the dogs provided the only means of travel during wintertime at Svalbard. We spend the night in a tent camp by the fjord with the dogs as Polar bear "alarms" around the camp. The camp is placed under a bird mountain with a wonderful view to the majestic Tempelfjellet and the Tuna- and Von Post glaciers in distance. The camp will work as base camp, as starting point for the day trip. Our experienced guides will decide each days plan dependent on the weather and snow conditions. The interaction between man and animal could be both rough and fun. A dogsled trip gives a whole new meaning to the words freedom and peace. The only sounds are the sledges and the dogs paws against the snow.
